Musk Incense has been known since ancient times, when musk Incense was used by the people of Arabia to mix with the cement used to build their mosques.

Musk originated from the scent gland of the musk deer but today tastes and trends have changed so that the ingredient used to imitate the fragrance is plant-based​ but there are few plants which  are commercially used to extract an oily substance which resembles musk in fragrance : 

• musk mallow or Ambrette seed ~ native to India;
• musk tree and musk wood ​~ native to Australia;
• musk flower; found in the rocky mountains
• Garden Angelica which grows in wild numbers in Scandinavia.

These plant compounds have a clean, smooth and sweet scent BUT is lacking the ‘bacterial notes’ of animal musk. They are used as flavourings and in cosmetics, fixatives, detergents, perfumes and foods. The compound supplies the base note of many perfume formulas.

Today, most Musk Fragrance used in perfumery, candle making, Incense, Oils and such like are Synthetic based meaning “ALL MUSK SCENTS are Chemical Compounds modelled after the main Odorants in Animal Musk: Muscone in Deer Musk, Civetone in Civet,

and Ambroxide in Ambergris (WHALE VOMIT).” 

However, most modern traditional Chinese medicine STILL use Natural Musk Pods from animals.The musk pod is normally obtained by killing the male deer through traps laid in the wild. Today, the trade quantity of the Natural Musk is controlled by CITES, but illegal poaching and trading continues.
